Abstract

Physical education constitutes a basic activity at Nursery School. From 1896 until today all the syllabuses refer to Physical Education as a basic activity in the daily program of the Nursery School. A child develops with games and with exercise not only physically but mentally, socio-emotionally and psychokinetically. The purpose of PE is for children to learn to move and to gain knowledge through movement. The most recent syllabus of DEPSS refers to physical education that is associated with rhythm, with individual expression and dancing, as well as the commencement of children mimicking sport. We can claim that the educational process has offered some although not enough opportunities for nursery school teachers to be updated. We have to point out though that special emphasis needs to be given to the fundamental studies of future nursery school teachers with superior proficiency in subjects related to physical education. And it is from this perspective that we consider that the nine Pedagogic Departments for Nursery School teachers in Greece should offer one or more lessons related to physical education. It is a basic precondition for all the Pre School Educational Departments – to pursue international developments in the specific field and to give the opportunity to future educators to realise its importance and to include it in their educational activities. In this project we will endeavour to present the position of physical education in the Educational Programs of the PTDE of the country.
