Abstract
There is growing evidence that the misuse of doping substances is also present in leisure and fitness sports. Approximately 10 – 20% of German fitness center visitors report having used doping substances at some point in time. The misuse of doping substances is associated with a number of health hazards. Reports from users, case reports and scientific studies show that particularly anabolic androgenic steroids cause a broad spectrum of side effects, such as adverse effects on the cardiovascular system and the liver which can have life-threatening consequences.
