Abstract

Three commercial cellulase preparations were evaluated as a sole enzyme source for the enzymatic production of reducing sugars from corn cobs. Rapidase Pomaliq (Gist-Brocades) was found to yield significantly more reducing sugars than Celluclast 1.5L (Novo) and Clarex ML (Genencor). Under favorable conditions (pretreated with NaOH, followed by 48 h of reaction at 50°C and pH 5.0), Rapidase Pomaliq was capable of increasing the amount of reducing sugars from an initial concentration of 106±88 g to 550±110 g/kg of dry matter of corn cobs. Of the reducing sugars produced in the reaction mixture, xylose, glucose, arabinose and cellobiose constituted 35, 45, 3 and 17%, respectively.
